First Tub Bath

Dear Sis,

Charlotte was very scared of the sound of the running bath and would scream each time I tried to place her in water. This time, I added a brother to the tub, to see if that would make her any more accepting. She fussed for a moment and William sang her Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and she decided it was fine:)

Learning through Science: Colors Unit (Review)

Dear Sis,

We are just finishing up Learning through Science: Colors Unit by Paige Hudson, creator of Elemental Science curriculum. This five dollar, seven week unit of study download, is for young children, ages 2.5 to 4, working through early preschool concepts. Each weekly lesson is themed around a color, with an optional shape addition.

Weekly Lesson Breakdown

  • The highlight of each weekly lesson is a science/sensory experiment/activity. My son especially liked the ones that used food he could snack on during or after the lesson:)
    • Each experiment or activity has a “Take it Further” suggestion, if your student is eager for more. We did a few of them and made up a few of our own.
  • There is a list of Read-Aloud suggestions. We just got six color themed books from our library each week without consideration for the list:)
  • Next there are two weekly note booking suggestions.
    • A weekly color collage, which we skipped. Many of the activities were artsy and William gets burt out with too much of any one thing.
    • The second note booking selection usually combined the color and shape concepts in a mathematical way. We liked these and added our own extension to these ideas.
  • Finally, there is a list of coordinating activities: art, math, fine motor, movement, and snack suggestions.

Although we didn’t love every activity and suggestion, this lesson plan was a great starting point that gave me the inspiration I needed to form my own weekly lesson plan.

Here’s a peek at our homeschool fun!

Tag Sis, You're It! http://www.tagsisyoureit.com/

William enjoyed blue week’s hands-on project and “take it further” suggestion so much he wanted to do more. I had to think on my feet to create more activity for him:) We rinsed off some blueberries. Math: we counted the blueberries as we dropped them into the water. Fine Motor: we used a skewer to poke the berries and remove them from the water to eat. He loved my additions so well, we did it again during purple week with grapes:)

Blue week’s fine motor activity is making and using homemade finger paint. The batch is huge and if your kid is anything like mine, he won’t be finished until it is gone. I recommend a half batch:)

Green week’s movement activity uses the oval shape to create lily pads for frog hopping. I made ten so we could count while we hopped. I had to tape them to the hard floor so he didn’t slip and fall. They stayed the rest of the week and were part of countless other play activities:)

Papa Jeff’s Visit – Spring 2020

Dear Sis,

Papa Jeff did a job in Texas this past week. He stopped to visit yesterday morning, on his way back home. It was short, but sweet:)

Charlotte needed a wardrobe change in the afternoon. She got to wear the lovely knit dress you made for Evelyn some time ago!

Charlotte likes being vertical so much, Josh decided it was time to take out the walker.

We took a three generation photo for Great Grandma Cooper just before Papa Jeff headed home this morning.

While I was putting Charlotte down for her afternoon nap, William snuck out of his bed and fell asleep on the stairs while he was waiting for me. Josh camped out on the stirs for over 30 minutes to make sure he wouldn’t fall.

Charlotte’s new headbands arrived! I was looking for simple bows, in a variety of colors, with this type of elastic band. It’s the only type of elastic band we’ve found that stays in place well without digging in too much!

First Day of Spring

Dear Sis,

Today was lovely! I had to pull a t-shirt and mid-length skirt from storage for the warmth of the day. We went on three walk/bike rides, before nap time, and Josh arrived home in the afternoon. What a wonderful welcome to spring!!!

Reading?!

Dear Sis,

It’s been mostly rainy here lately, so when the rain took a break after lunch, we were quick to sneak in a walk before nap time! Charlotte rode in her Ergo 360 very happily and her big brother peddled his ever shrinking tricycle.

On the way home, William paused so say, “Mama that says, “no.”” He then asked what the rest of the sign said. Naturally, I was very excited! William read his first word!!! We took a picture with the sign to save the memory:)

Six Months Old

Dear Sis,

I am a bit stunned that it has been half a year since Charlotte entered our lives!!! She is the sunshine of our home. Her smiling sweet temper is such a gift! She looks up to her big brother and he adores her:)

These outfits were supposed to be for our Easter trip to PA. In light of current events, we will not be making that trip, so we used our special outfits for our 6 month photo shoot:)

Apparently two kids sitting still and smiling at the same time is too much to ask for:)

Most of the photo shoot the rabbit was sideways, William was laughing, and Charlotte was playing with her dress. She found the lace fascinating!

D.I.Y. Robot Head

Dear Sis,

William enjoys pretending to be a robot, by wearing cardboard boxes on his head. We decided to take things to the next level, by making the box look like a robot head:)

Supplies

Medium Cardboard Box (Diaper Box)

Aluminum Foil & Packing Tape

Permanent Marker, Scissors, and Serrated Knife

Assembly

  1. Cut flaps off box.
  2. Draw cutouts with permanent marker and then use serrated knife to create them.
  3. Wrap box in foil, securing as needed with tape.
  4. Color with permanent markers, if desired.

Happy Pretend Play!

Love,

b
